Lucerne
A city in German-speaking north-central Switzerland.
Lucerne is the capital of Canton Lucerne and of the district of the same name.
Lucerne is the most populous city in Switzerland and a node for transport, telecommunications, and regional government.
The city of Lucerne has long been a destination for tourists who love lakeside towns, thanks to its position on the northwestern shore of the Lake of the Four Cantons, also known as Lake Lucerne, and the city enjoys a truly spectacular panorama including views of Mounts Pilatus and Rigi in the Swiss Alps.
From the lake of Lucerne, the River Reuss flows through the town.
The two parts, separated by the river, are connected by one of the first wooden bridges, the Kapellbrücke, built in the 14th century and one of the top points of interest for visitors.
Most of the monumental buildings are found along the riverbanks, with the historic center of Lucerne situated a little to the north of the watercourse with many wattle constructions having painted facades.
The Kapellbrücke, 204 meters long, and build in wood, goes back to 1333 and is the most famous bridge in the city.
Most of it was rebuilt following a fire on 18 August 1993. About half way along the bridge is the octagonal tower of the Wasserturm (Water Tower), a 13th-century fortification.
Inside the bridge is a series of 17th-century paintings illustrating particular moments in the history of Lucerne.
An ideal city for business
Thanks to its continuing policy of tax-reduction, Lucerne is well on the way to becoming the most business-friendly canton in Switzerland, boasting the lowest cantonal company tax in Switzerland.
The city is very picturesque, surrounded by beautiful mountains and the Lake of the Four Cantons, and possesses an atmospheric historic center facing onto the River Reuss, altogether a place that merits visiting and experiencing.
